Southern Illinois wrestling team to compete without school funds

Posted: Updated:

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School wrestling team will compete this year without the funding of the school district.

The district had to make the tough decision to scrap the program since fewer students were joining the team.

But the A-J Junior Wildcats Wrestling Club threw in $500.

Then Grover Mays Construction threw in $5,000, all to keep the team together through next year.

That way, those students who are on the team won't be left behind.

"Knowing we're going to be able to have kids that otherwise may not have a sport, or maybe not have anything else to do during that time," said Rollie Hawk, Jr. Club President. "It really helps to enhance their academic experience I believe both academically and in sports."

Head Coach Grover Mays says he hopes the school board will bring funding back to the team once more students sign up.
