Southern Illinois group to help with Colorado flood relief

MARION, IL (KFVS) -

Help is on the way from the Heartland after historic flooding in Colorado.

Torrential rains pounded the area over a couple of days dumping more than twenty inches of rain.

All that water rushed out of the mountains through the foothills and out into the open prairie lands in eastern Colorado.

The total damages top more than 1 billion.

A group of volunteers with the Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief in Illinois are heading to Colorado.

"I think we go with the idea not only we're helping them, we are witnessing for Christ," said Gordon Gisy, Williamson Baptist Association. "And I think everybody that goes has that kind of commitment. That it's not just us tearing something up and hauling something away."

Each family that the volunteers help out in Colorado will be given a Bible in English or Spanish, a chaplain bear and salvation dolls for the kids in the family.

The team from Marion will leave on Saturday morning for their relief effort in Colorado.
