Guy Heinze Jr.'s attorney calls verdict disappointing

Posted: Updated:
GLYNN CO., GA (WTOC) -

There is a chance for the defense to appeal the verdict delivered by a Glynn County jury for a man charged with the slayings of eight people at a Georgia mobile home. But it's unclear at this point whether the case will be appealed.

A jury found Guy Heinze Jr., 26, guilty on all eight counts of malice murder for the slaying of his father, aunt, uncle, cousins, and a family friend during a drug-induced rage in 2009.

The defense had questioned the integrity of the Glynn County Police Dept. when they brought up a steak knife that was taken into evidence, but the knife did not have Heinze Jr.'s DNA or blood on it.

Heinze had pleaded not guilty to all charges. The agreement to dismiss the hung juror was to remove the death penalty in the case.

The verdict came three and a half hours after a juror was removed from the case on Friday and an alternate was added. The judge then sent them into new deliberations.

Eleven gulity verdicts were read as Heinze Jr. appeared to take a deep breath.

No one in the courtroom was aware of the deal the state and defense struck earlier in the day. As family members on both sides and even defense team members grew emotional, WTOC learned the deal was to remove the one juror if the death penalty was taken off the table.

"The point is to get it over with. That's the jury's decision, and you respect any decision they make. In this [in] case they have the right to appeal," Johnson said.

Heinze's attorney Newell Hamilton was brief in his reaction after the verdict was read. "Yeah, I'm disappointed," Hamilton said. He would not comment on an appeal.

The sentencing has yet to be determined.
