Edmonson Park to honor famed Nashville artist

Posted: Updated:

Nashville city leaders broke ground on a new park Friday that will honor a well-known local artist.

The new Edmonson Park will be located on Charlotte Avenue, between 16th and 17th avenues North.

The park is named for famed Nashville native William Edmonson, who was the first African American to have a solo show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The park in Edmonson's memory will bring together modern art, including a piece called The Gathering, and it will feature classical art with fragments of limestone columns from the Tennessee State Capitol.

The $550,000 price tag for the new park will be covered by a community development block grant administered by the Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency.
