RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Kings Dominion is defending one of its newest attractions after a Washington Post oped slammed its haunted maze "Miner's Revenge," Friday.

The description on Kings Dominion website says, the fictional story it's based on is "the worst coal mine accident in history." A group of miners are trapped, left for dead and want revenge.

When Richmond writer Peter Galuszka heard about the new attraction, he was appalled and wrote his concerns in the Washington Post, where he is a freelance writer.

Galuszka also spent the better part of two years in West Virginia researching a book on the Massey coal mine tragedy.

"When you actually talk to the wife of a man who was blown apart in real life, it's hard to think of being amused by seeing a skeleton half blown apart in a maze and laughing about it," said Galuszka.

NBC12 spoke to people outside Kings Dominion Friday night. Plenty of people had plans to walk through Miner's Revenge and weren't offended by it.

"It's Halloween and you can't take it seriously," said one park-goer.

"I don't think Kings Dominion meant anything by it," said another.

To that Galuszka says, "I think people forget mining is one of the most dangerous professions you can do. Already 18 miners have died so far this year in the United States."

He hopes the park will do right by miners who have passed and will close the maze next year.

Kings Dominion said in an email, "Miner's Revenge is not designed, nor intended, to depict a specific situation. Rather, it is simply a themed Halloween attraction for the 2013 Halloween Haunt season at Kings Dominion."
