Man to face animal cruelty charges in Mass.

Posted: Updated:

QUINCY, Mass. (AP) - The man accused of torturing and beating a dog that was euthanized after being found barely alive in Quincy this summer is about to face a judge.

Radoslaw Czerkawski (RAD'-oh-slaw zehr-KAW'-skee), a 32-year-old Polish man who was living in Massachusetts, was scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday in Quincy District Court. He faces 11 counts of animal cruelty and is also charged with misleading police.

Czerkawski was arrested last week in New Britain, Conn. It was not immediately known who is representing him.

The dog, nicknamed "Puppy Doe," was described as a pit bull type breed about a year old. Police said the dog had been starved and had severe injuries including a fractured skull, stab wounds and a split tongue.

The case has prompted calls for tougher penalties in Massachusetts for animal abuse.
