Husband in rehab, wife recovering after bizarre I-95 incident

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Tom and Betty Doyle, the couple mysteriously injured by what police are still calling a projectile on Interstate 95 near the Chippenham interchange last month, are back home recovering in Pennsylvania.

It's now been about three weeks since this incident that has baffled investigators and put the community on edge. Many would say that's rightfully so because we still don't know exactly what injured the Doyles as they were driving on I-95, but we do know those injuries are serious, required surgery and even rehab.

For Betty and Tom Doyle, what was supposed to be a short trip from the Philadelphia area to Florida to visit a relative ended up having lasting impacts. Those impacts have changed their lives forever.

Tom Doyle has been moved to Magee Rehabilitation in Philadelphia. While the exact extent of his injuries from some sort of projectile flying through the driver's side window is unclear, we've learned this facility specializes in spinal cord and brain injuries, along with strokes and amputations.

Betty Doyle had what friends call a "very successful" surgery two weeks ago. According to a post on their Caringbridge site, doctors removed teeth, bone and metal from her face.

Both are anticipating more doctors' appointments and physical and occupational therapy on the long road to recovery.

The investigation so far has also been a long road for troopers and this community. Many of you have called NBC12 concerned about a possible shooter targeting the interstate. Virginia State Police have told us there is no conclusive evidence that points to gunfire.

Still, we were expecting more updates as surgeons removed whatever injured and left fragments in the Doyles' wounds. Detectives are also hoping the public can help solve this case with information from anyone was driving in the area on October 10. Family and friends are still offering a $10,000 reward for information if this incident involved a criminal act.

"If you saw something and this was a family member of yours that it had happened to you would want to have the answers to the questions we're asking," Sue Harrigan explained.

It is unclear at this point if either Tom or Betty Doyle will have to have any other surgeries in the future.

Virginia State Police are asking anyone who was on I-95 near Chippenham around 11:30pm October 10 to call them at 553-3408.
