1 killed in Akin mine accident

FRANKLIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

A man was killed in a mine accident at the Sugar Camp M-Class Mine in Akin, Illinois Monday.

Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler says he was notified at 2:58 p.m. Monday by the Franklin Hospital Emergency Room of a death from a mining accident.

Dallas Dwaine Travelstead, 36, of Marion was pronounced dead at the Franklin Hospital Emergency Room.

A large piece of coal about three feet long, 18 inches thick and 20 inches wide rolled over onto Travelstead. It took most of the crew to remove the coal from him, according to Amy Louviere with MSHA.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Tuesday afternoon.

The Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident.

Travelstead is survived by a wife, two children, and many other relatives.
