Early morning fire at nursing home, all residents evacuated

(WMC-TV) – The Memphis Fire Department was called to a fire at a nursing home in Hickory Hill that resulted in the evacuation of 50 to 60 residents.

Reports came in just after 5 a.m. on Tuesday of the fire at Newberry Heights in the 5800 block of Newberry Avenue.

Officials say alarms alerted the fire department and the residents to the fire. Two units were impacted, one was burned and the other was damaged by smoke.

There were between 50 and 60 residents and all were evacuated safely.

Officials believe the fire started around an air conditioning unit, but an investigation is still underway.
