MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) -

The absence of a new farm bill by Congress is not only costing families on the food stamp program, it's also taking a toll on USDA food donations to food pantries here in the Heartland and across the nation.

The Murphysboro Food Pantry opens it's doors every day Monday through Friday at 9 a.m., and within minutes the waiting area is filled with families in need of food.

"As USDA supplies decline and we're seeing it, a year ago a 25,000 pound delivery was the norm for the month," Jane Williams said. "Last month it was five thousand pounds of two items that were basically useless."

The food pantry had to dig into their cash donations to the tune of $8,000 to buy the other food items they needed to fill the food boxes.

"We're just committed to not reducing the size and quality of the boxes," Williams said.

People in Jackson County can pick up a box of food once a month at the food pantry.

For Janet Bush of Elkville, she said anything she can get to help feed her family she appreciates.

"We're very fortunate, it really helps out," Bush said. "We appreciate the food pantry and the people that work here, that are willing to take time out to serve people that are in need of it."

Everyone at the Murphysboro Food Pantry volunteers their time to try to help feed people in Jackson County.

"I think that's part of our success, is that every person here is here because they want to be," Williams said. "And they're committed to the cause and we're just so adamant about finding a way to help these people."

Through donations of food from area businesses and cash donations from churches and individuals, the Murphysboro Food Pantry has been abel to feed families in Jackson County for the past five years.

This year they anticipate feeding more than 37,000 people in the county, that's 2,000 more than they feed in 2012.

"Obviously the need is growing, so we're trying to fill that gap," said Williams.
