Enrollment policies for Kansas City's Montessori schools could change

Posted: Updated:
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The Kansas City School District is looking at changing its enrollment procedures for its Montessori schools.

Border Star and Holliday schools are incredibly popular in part due to their academic achievement and curriculum, and the waiting list for applicants grows each year.

Border Star and Holliday are so popular that the application waiting list grows every year. Some parents feel the current method of accepting students, first come-first served, isn't fair.

Parents have complained to the district, saying that method puts some families at an unfair disadvantage of getting their children into the schools. They say getting your child into the school can be as difficult as snagging hot concert tickets.

"Some people can't take off work to stand in line," one parent said.

Superintendent Stephen Green said the Montessori program is so sought after that 50-plus children are on a waiting list annually.

"It's a philosophy of education that's very popular," Green said.

In an effort to level the playing field, Green said the district is considering an enrollment lottery, which Montessori schools around the country often adopt.

The district is offering an online poll of parents.

"We want to get a sense of their thoughts, their sentiments," Green said. "That's part of our responsibility."

Green said the district hasn't ruled out opening a third Montessori school, saying it depends on public demand and enrollment figures. A third Montessori school, Faxon, was closed several years ago during the district's resizing program.

For now, Green said the district wants to hear from parents on whether a lottery is needed or not and whether the current enrollment process is fine or not.

The poll can be found here.

The district has set up a poll, which asks the question, "Should KCPS institute an enrollment lottery at Border Star and Holliday Montessori schools?"

Parents have 30 days to voice their thoughts.
