MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Many different organizations are honoring veterans and active duty soldiers this Veterans Day weekend.

Among them, some places are offering free items in honor of Veterans Day.

FREE RIDES FROM MATA

The Memphis Area Transit Authority is giving veterans and current soldiers free rides on all fixed route buses, MATAplus, and the downtown trolley. To take advantage of this offer, a Veterans Identification Card or an active military identification must be presented.

"Our veterans have served our country, so it is the least we can do to serve them on this special day," said MATA President, William Hudson.

RESTAURANT DEALS

Several local restaurants have the same mindset Hudson does.

On The Border Mexican Grill and Cantina is one of the supporting grills.

Veterans and active duty military soldiers who attend the restaurant will get free 'create your own combo' meals.

Select organizations are donating 15 percent of the profits to the nonprofit Carry the Load in support of Veterans Day.

Another restaurant offering benefits to the former and current solders is Shoney's.

If veterans attend Shoney's, they will receive a free all-American burger Monday, November 11.

There is a limit of one per day per military service member. Shoney's offer is not valid with any other offers. Tax and gratuity are not included.

MILITARY SALUTES

Saturday, the Memphis Grizzlies are teaming up with Ashley Furniture Home Store for its annual military salute.

The game begins at 7 p.m. and a special military salute will honor members of the different branches each quarter on the court.

Halftime is scheduled to feature a special enlistment ceremony where 68 individuals will take the oath of service for the Army, Navy, and the Air Force.

In honor of Veterans Day, one local school, the Woodland Presbyterian School, is hosting a special ceremony at 8 a.m. November 11th.

At the ceremony, students will honor family members who have served, the middle school chorus will perform a vocal tribute to the veterans, and a 'wall of thanks' will be presented.

The 'wall of thanks' is made up of hundreds of cards from students from all grades. These students are thanking those who have served in the military.

CLOSURES

Other institutions are choosing to close in honor of Veterans Day.

The Memphis Public Library, DeSoto County Administrative Offices, DeSoto County Courts, and the City of Memphis Division of Public Works all will be closed Monday.

The Memphis Public Library will reopen to its regular hours Tuesday, November 12.

The City of Memphis will not pick up garbage and recycling Monday, November 11th. Instead, the organization will begin picking up garbage and recycling Tuesday, November 12.

In a press release from the City of Memphis Solid Waste Management, the department let Memphians know the excess trash and yard debris will not be picked up Tuesday.
