Low turnout at Jackson Veteran's Day parade

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Veteran's Day is officially recognized this Monday, but for many people a day or two out of the year isn't enough to show appreciation for those who've given their lives for our security.

American flags waved, bands played and military planes flew to pay tribute to our veterans past and present, prisoners of war and those who went missing.

"I was drafted and I'm proud of it because I'm a better man," said retired U.S. Army Sgt. James McPherson.

Retired U.S. Navy Veteran Bill Carey served the U.S. for nearly 30 years.

"The requirement was 4 years active duty service and 28 years later I decided to retire," said Carey.

Julia Soutullo waved enthusiastically to her 87 year-old dad who was part of the Veteran's Day Parade in Jackson. Soutullo's father who is a devout Navy Veteran served the U.S. in the South Pacific during World War II.

"He joined during the bombing of Pearl Harbor," said Soutullo.

Considering millions of Americans have given their lives for our defense, some in the crowd at Saturday's parade were disappointed with the turnout.

"I'm disappointed it wasn't publicized enough because I know a lot of Veterans would have been here," said McPherson.

"We have a price to pay for this country and they paid it and it's sad that we don't have more people out here to honor people who died for us," explained Soutullo.

Veterans were also honored at the Cedar Lawn Cemetery in west Jackson where several children and teens laid dozens of flags on Veteran's tombstones.

"Some of these people died protecting our country it's not going to kill us to go put a flag at their grave," said 13 year old boy scout Johnny Bethea.

"The stone tells you if it's from a war, so then we know that we put a flag there," said Bethea's younger sister Angela.

Several other Veterans' Day ceremonies are taking place throughout Jackson and surrounding areas Sunday and Monday.
