Officer killed at Phenix City Carriage Hill Apartments believed to have shot himself in leg

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

Authorities in Phenix City, Ala. continue to investigate an incident that killed a 29-year-old police officer Daniel Davis. The shooting happened on Sunday Nov. 10 at about 8 p.m. at the Carriage Hill Apartments in Phenix City.

Early on Monday, Russell County Deputy Coroner Billy Dickson confirmed that Davis died of a gunshot wound at the apartment complex located on Lakewood Drive. and Summerville Road.

Dickson confirmed to News Leader 9 that Davis shot himself in the leg and said that the bullet may have made its way through an artery, causing him to bleed out.

At this time, the case stands as "accidental" until the ABI finishes their investigation on the shooting. The ABI is also working with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery.

According to investigators, Davis was just getting off work and was still wearing his uniform when the shooting happened. He was shot inside an unmarked state vehicle.

Police say the officer lived with his girlfriend at the Carriage Hill Apartments. Law enforcement has not told us if they are looking for a suspect or if his fatal injury was self-inflicted.

The officer's body was sent to Montgomery, Ala. for an autopsy.
