High school football players face battery charges for allegedly punching referee

FRANKLIN, LA (WAFB) -

Two high school football players have been arrested after a referee was punched at a game two weeks ago.

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office reported the boys are 15 and 16 years old and attend West St. Mary High. The players are both from Baldwin. They were arrested at the office in Franklin.

The teens are charged with battery of a school or recreational athletic official. They were released to their guardians pending juvenile court proceedings.

Deputies said the incident happened during a West St. Mary football game on November 1. According to detectives, the referee was punched in the head and shoulder areas.

Authorities said a deputies working security at the game were notified of a disturbance on the field and began investigating. It was then turned over to the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office Juvenile Division.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
