Deputies in Rowan County say the survivor of a deadly attack, which left a World War II vet dead, is talking with investigators about the attack.

The Rowan County Sheriff's Office says J.D. Furr was killed and his daughter hospitalized after the pair was attacked at Furr's River Road home last Wednesday.

Furr was found dead in his backyard, and his daughter, 62-year-old Sandra Steen, was found on the ground clinging to life nearby.

Investigators say they have been able to talk with Steen several times to obtain any information she can offer about this incident.

She remains hospitalized at an area hospital, and her condition has improved from last week, although she will continue to endure a long recovery process.

"Sheriff's Office Investigators continue in their efforts to collect evidence and facts needed for a positive prosecutory outcome at a trial," officials told WBTV. "While investigators cannot speak about details of this investigation or investigative strategies, to protect the integrity of the case, it does take time to thoroughly cover and exhaust each lead."

Investigators say they believe robbery was the motive, and they say they believe J.D. Furr and his daughter were attacked between 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night and 8:20 p.m. Wednesday morning.

Anyone with information is asked to call Rowan-Salisbury Crime Stoppers at 1-866-639-5245.
