'Ski-Mask Rapist' confesses to additional rapes in 1979, police say

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A man sentenced to life in prison for a series of rapes that happened in Charlotte more than 30 years ago has now confessed to five additional rapes and one attempted rape.

The additional cases come from an interview Jerry Lee Brooks agreed to have as part of a plea agreement, according to Sergeant Darrell Price with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. Brooks met with detectives from CMPD's Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit.

"I can certainly say he did not give us this information out of the goodness of his heart," said Price. He added that it was the right thing for Brooks to do, in light of the plea agreement

In every case, Price says Brooks wore a ski-mask. He targeted random victims, often following women home from work or from the grocery store, said Price.

All the crimes occurred in Charlotte between March 19 and July 5 of 1979, police say.

Brooks will not be charged in the other six cases because the confession was part of the plea agreement. The District Attorney's Office says the evidence in those cases was also too weak for prosecution.

Price said the department is trying to track down the victims from the other six cases. The passage of 30 years makes finding people difficult, he said.

He believes there are more victims out there.

Brooks was arrested back in 2012 after detectives with the Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit got a DNA match. He had previously been convicted of bank robbery and had submitted DNA to authorities.
