SPRING HILL, TN (WSMV) -

A man died and his wife was hospitalized after gunfire rattled their quiet neighborhood in Spring Hill.

Police identified the two people shot as Robert and Sue Land, a beloved couple in their 60s.

Apparently married for decades, it remains a mystery how it all ended this way Wednesday morning along Freemantle Circle in the Cherry Grove community.

"They were great people. They were very easygoing," said neighbor Chris Stammen.

Stammen lives next door to the Lands and said he cannot believe what happened inside their home.

"(I'm) just shocked. I figured somebody broke in. And you know, because they said, they had said there was gunshots, and I thought somebody broke in," Stammen said. "It just makes no sense. Like I said, these are the most loving people I've ever met."

Sue Land called 911 just after 4:15 a.m., with multiple gunshot wounds.

But when police arrived, they also found her husband shot dead in their master bedroom.

"This is a fairly quiet community. And for something like this to happen, at 4:17 in the morning, is unusual," said Spring Hill Police Lt. Justin Whitwell.

The home showed no sign of forced entry, and police did not warn of a gunman on the run.

But for now, police will not say what they believe happened, leaving neighbors to speculate about a seemingly happy couple who met their end in one of the worst ways possible.

"They came over and watched movies with my kids. The way they held hands, they'd sit next to each other," Stammen said. "It was always, 'I love you. I love you. I miss you.' I mean, it was like two high school sweethearts."

The couple did not have children.

Sue Land remains in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
