ANDALUSIA, AL (WSFA) -

Boxing up memories and hanging it up, Andalusia Police Chief Wilbur Williams has decided to retire. Williams is leaving behind decades worth of homicide investigations beginning in Mobile and now quietly leaving the top post in a small town.

The veteran lawman took a break from packing in his office and sat down with WSFA 12 News for what could be his final interview.

"I'm good with it. No issues. I won't rule out a return to law enforcement, but right now it's just time for me to go," said Williams, who is 65-years-old.

The chief takes pride for establishing what he considers a much higher standard for Andalusia police officers. Williams is also proud of the fact he helped get the police department's own Incident Response Vehicle, but that's not his crown jewel. That's located two miles away.

"This is one of the most proudest moments in my life," said Williams.

Williams is referring to the $1 million law enforcement training center, built and named after him three years ago. The center has classrooms, a firing range and Williams credits his wife for coming up with the idea of building an observation deck overlooking the grounds.

"It still hasn't sunk it yet, but I am just humbled by this," said Williams.

Back at headquarters Williams admitted to perhaps being a little too pushy when he was appointed chief shortly after Christmas in 2000.

"Some people say I am arrogant, but I tell them don't confuse arrogance with confidence. I need confident people around me to do their jobs," Williams explained.

For now, at least, Williams is walking away from a 40-year career in law enforcement with few regrets, walking away to begin a new season in his life.
