MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries is celebrating its 130th anniversary of serving the state's citizens.

The Dept. of Agriculture was born of a legislative at sponsored by State Senator Hiram Hawkins of Barbour County back in 1883. The law took effect by the end of that year.

The 130th anniversary was marked by current Ag. Commissioner John McMillian and three former commissioners Jack Thompson (1995–1999), Charles Bishop (1999–2003) and Ron Sparks (2003–2011).

The Ag. Department's early days saw it as a regulatory body for the sale and distribution of fertilizer, but today it's duties are considerably larger and include regulatory duties in the areas of, agricultural compliance, animal industries, food safety, pesticide management, petroleum commodities, plant protection, seed laboratory, shipping point inspection and weights & measures.

New federal regulations have changed what many kids who attend public schools eat for lunch at school. However, some area private schools don't have to follow those rules and have come up with their own new school lunch program.
