Opelika investigators are trying to find the owners of hundreds of stolen items found in an Opelika apartment.

Tuesday officers received a call of a burglary in progress at a home in the 400 block Westwood Street.

The homeowner scared off 25-year-old Rayfus Lockhart of Auburn and 22-year-old Martez Simmons of Opelika who left in a SUV and headed to a nearby apartment complex on Pleasant Circle.

"Officers were able to chase one (suspect) and the other one fled to a nearby apartment officers were then able to get a search warrant for the residence that and the vehicles that were in the parking lot and were able to recover all of this property," explains Captain Bruce DeLong of the Opelika Police Department.

Authorities believe this property stems from burglaries reported in Opelika, Phenix City and Auburn.

Some items have been claimed by victims, but OPD is urging people to come forward if any of the property looks familiar, especially if you have recorded serial numbers for your missing items.

"If they use the serial number for the property it would be entered in the computer and if it was found somewhere in the United States they would be able to track that back to our department," says DeLong.

Opelika resident, Debbie Coleman, was at her home on Pleasant Circle when Lockhart and Simmons were taken into custody.

She admits she has never kept a log of her valuables, but will now consider taking the time record serial numbers.

"I guess I'm just one of the lucky people because I've never had a person break into my house to steal stuff is the reason I never did it, but yes that is a good thing for folks to do, either write their serial numbers down or put a little mark that they know and nobody else does," says Coleman.

If you recognize any of these items you are urged to contact the Opelika Police Department.
