Central AL Community College opens $4M library

ALEXANDER CITY, AL (WSFA) -

It's a known fact it's hard sometimes to get young people to read today. The Central Alabama Community College in Alex City is counting on a $4 million investment to change that.

The new building has the simple word 'library' on the front, but that doesn't even to begin to tell the story, chapter by chapter of what's going on inside.

"I thought 'wow,'" said Marisa Martin.

The 'wow' factor struck Martin, sophomore, right away when she walked in for the first time Thursday.

"This is a place where I could come to everyday," Martin said.

On that score, librarian Denita Palsey feels they've succeeded.

"I think the architect did a very fine job with the design you see here," said Palsey.

Sixty computers, private study rooms, a coffee room and 11,000 books. Upstairs? Offices, meeting rooms and classrooms.

It's the view of the campus pond and its neighborhood residents Palsey feels closes the book on a good deal for students like Martin.

"You can see the ducks. I think it's relaxing and very calming," said Palsey.

The old library across the way was built in 1968. Palsey says it got to the point where they had to do something. The reason is the building received some 'unwanted visitors.'

"It was infected with mildew and mold. We lost 3,000 books because of that," Palsey said.

College administrators got approval from the state's secondary education board to borrow the 4 million to build the new library.

And there's more; a fire place adds to the coziness, an amenity Palsey makes no apologies for.

"Kids today carry a load on their shoulders and they come in here work on that research paper in a beautiful setting," said Palsey.

The old library versus the new one, a world of difference between the two.
