WEST FRANKFORT, IL (KFVS) -

A southbound Union Pacific train hit and killed a man in West Frankfort at the Elm Street crossing Thursday evening.

According to West Frankfort police, the incident happened around 9 p.m.

Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler says the train was traveling south when it approached Elm Street and that's when 50-year-old Carl F. Jackson of West Frankfort went around the gates and tried to cross the tracks in front of the train.

Jackson's body was found around 60 yards south of the initial impact, just west of the 100 block of Short Street.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler says preliminary autopsy results on Jackson reveal that he died due to a high cervical spine fracture due to multiple blunt impact trauma.

Final autopsy results will not be available until toxicology reports are final. Those reports should be available in four weeks.

Leffler says alcohol is expected to have been a contributing factor in this case.

The West Frankfort Police Department, Illinois State Police, and Franklin County Coroner are currently investigating.
