TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Oro Valley police are releasing new details after a bizarre freak accident killed 31-year old Nichole McAlister of Avra Valley.

Tonight, police are saying they've seen nothing like it.

The accident took place in a Walmart shopping center parking lot, just after 8 PM on Monday night.  Police say McAlister was killed after getting run over several times by a driver-less pickup truck.

The incident was caught on Walmart surveillance cameras.  Police have obtained the video and showed it to us tonight.  Everyone, including traffic investigators who have investigated hundreds of crashes said, they've never seen anything like it.

Police say McAlister and a mechanic friend met up with some another friend who was having problems with a pickup truck.  Police say the 1985 Chevy had a bad steering wheel, and while the mechanic friend was trying to fix it, he asked McAlister to reach inside and turn the wheel.

"She stepped partially into the vehicle with one foot in, one foot out and accidentally knocked it into reverse.  The vehicle had a very high idle and quickly geared into reverse, it pulled her under the truck," said Oro Valley Police Lt. Chris Olson.

Police say what happened next stunned everyone.  The pickup truck lurched back, pinning McAlister under the truck.  Then it started circling in reverse with no driver in it.

We watched the surveillance video.  The pickup truck knocked McAlister to the ground, ran over her, then made two loops around the parking lot, running over her body two more times.  A friend is seen trying to run and jump into the truck as it is circling around the parking lot.  There appeared to be chaos at the scene.

Police say it all happened very fast.  The pickup truck ran over McAlister three times in just 15-20 seconds.  The friend was eventually able to catch up and jump into the truck and turn the engine off.

Police say McAlister suffered extensive head, neck, and chest injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

"I thought initially there had to be more to the story.  A vehicle that was not being driven by anyone, driving in reverse, circling around the lot, driving over a person three times," said Lt. Olson.

Barb Peterson, a friend who has known the victim for a long time was stunned to hear the news.

"Oh, I can't believe it. She was a sweet girl.  Sad ending.. Such a sad ending for her," said Peterson.

Friends said McAlister leaves behind a young son.
