TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A four-legged officer helped Toledo Police catch make a big drug bust.

Vespe, the only female on the Toledo Police Department K-9 Unit, followed the scent to 40 pounds of marijuana during a Wednesday morning shift.

Police say Vespe was checking packages coming into the city when she made a hit on three packages, two of which came from McAllen, Texas.

McAllen is a city near the Mexican border.

Police say the third drug package came from California. In total, the drugs Vespe discovered were worth thousands of dollars.

"She got 88,000 worth of marijuana off the street," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan. "That's a great accomplishment not just for her and her handler today, but for the city of Toledo."

Heffernan added, " These are drugs that won't be hitting the streets and won't be enticing our youth to use drugs."

TPD recently added six new K-9 officers to its unit. The department has a total of eight dogs on the force.
