This week’s Heartland Cook has his hands full. Derrick Geringer has three hungry kids and a lot of leftovers. Unfortunately, those three kids generally don’t like leftovers – so Derrick has had to get creative. He’s transformed lack-luster leftovers into pizzazz on a plate. To make this dish even more unique, Derrick cooks his Chili-cheese dog Bacon Cheeseburger pizzas on the grill.Ingredients:Chili Cheese Dog Pizza:Pizza Crust1 cup canned chili1 cup shredded cheddar cheese4 hotdogs (sliced)...

MARION, IL (KFVS) -

For those who like to do some last minute Christmas shopping, you've got one week less to do it in this year. What's that mean for retailers who depend on Black Friday sales to get out of the red?

While some retailers feel like online shopping or shopping at corporate businesses might be their biggest competition this year, the calendar might actually be their biggest challenge.

Shoppers have exactly six days less to shop this year than last. While the number of shopping days is a change for Country Porch and Country Gourmet owner, Brenda Cody.  She said that's really the only major change to this shopping year, as she sees it.  Cody said aside from how much you budget to spend this year, the most important thing hasn't changed: your Christmas list.

"People still have to shop, and they still have to buy their Christmas presents, so its just going to be compacted into a shorter time span," Cody said. "But, we still have the same number of people on our lists and we still have the same number of gifts to buy, so its just going to be a bit more frenzied, a little more hurried."

Cody said she's putting a coffee kiosk outside her store to turn holiday shoppers on to that section inside.

Meanwhile, just down the mall from The Country Gourmet is The Learning Zone.

Lisa Slinkard owns the Learning Zone where they specialize in kids toys. One thing Slinkard said they've done to promote sales, to make up for the lost shopping week, are hold toy demonstrations for parents and kids. She also said special sales are important. But most of all, Slinkard said she'll depend on a loyal customer base to make up the difference.

"We just really have to hope that shoppers will come and support the local mom and pops as much as they can," she said. "I understand about budgets and all, but that's what we have to hope for this season is that they will come in and support us and help us out."

Most of the customers say the difference in shopping days this year won't really have a bearing on how much they spend or where they spend it. The customers tend to sum it up as simply being an especially frantic shopping year.
