'He had a death grip on the knife': witness recounts hospital stabbing

Posted: Updated:

In under 10 minutes, The Longview Police Department says Kyron Templeton stabbed two nurses and three visitors at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview on Tuesday.

The victims and their families, along with police and several witnesses, are explaining more about what happened during the attacks.

Kryron Templeton was at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview on Tuesday with his mother. Officials say she was about to have a procedure done at the hospital's ambulatory surgical center when things went terribly wrong.

"The suspect came running, kind of galloping, and continued to say, 'killin' my momma, killin' my momma,' and he got really close to us," says Jana Jackson, who witnessed the stabbings.

Jackson's daughter was getting ready to go into surgery.

"Where we were we could see straight down to where he entered the center. He was pushing and shoving it appeared, now I know that's not what he was doing," Jackson says.

Police say the stabbings happened on the second floor. They say templeton started stabbing people in the day area pre-op wing and waiting area.

"He had a death grip on the knife, he was just muttering, his eyes were kind of wild looking," says Chad Jackson, Jana Jackson's husband.

Gail Sandidge was the nurse taking care of the couple's daughter. The Jacksons say they watched her become one of Templeton's victims.

"She came around the corner and he stabbed her and we saw that," Jana Jackson says.

Chad Jackson says they also saw the male victim, Harris Teel, laying on the ground in the next room, "We thought he got pushed at first but then later on we saw them performing CPR. It was chaotic."

They say Templeton walked just a few feet away from them.

"It looked like he was trying to find a way out but he looked right at both of us," Jana Jackson says.

"He sidestepped us and went to the right and then disappeared into another door," says Chad Jackson.

Police say after the stabbings Templeton ran down a staircase and left the hospital. He was arrested minutes later near the intersection of Sixth and Padon Street, just a few blocks from the hospital.

Officers searched storm drains for the knife used in the stabbings. They say a knife was found but they will not describe what kind of knife.

Templeton was taken to the Gregg County Jail and was charged at the courthouse shortly after.

Templeton is charged with one count of murder and four counts of aggravated assault.

Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview says they are going to hold a candlelight service in memory of Gail Sandidge. The service will start Monday night at 6 o'clock in the medical plaza's main parking lot.
