BROOKPORT, IL (KFVS) -

At noon on Monday, Brookport's mayor, John Klaffer, went in to surgery at an Indiana hospital after a two car crash Friday, according to family.

Massac County Sheriff Ted Holder said the crash happened around 5 p.m. in the 7800 block of Purcell in eastern Massac County.

The sheriff said the two cars hit head on at the top of a hill.

With the town's spirit hit hard again several family members including his wife, daughter and brother are all in Evansville to be by mayor John Klaffer's side.

While he's recovering, leaders in Brookport say despite another setback, the town won't miss a beat in its recovery.

"It is hard when you have always given, it is hard to take," said Susan Vinyard of Brookport.

No one knows the feeling of starting over more than Vinyard.

A fire destroyed her home eight years ago almost to the day, now she and her family are forced to pick up the pieces again.

"Having my children help me, and knowing that god is with me every day and every step of the way," she said.

The piles of debris aren't the only thing covering the town of Brookport.

The problems seem to piling up too with the town's leader, Mayor John Klaffer, in the hospital after a serious car crash; evident to the shape the car is in now.

"Little problems here, little problems there," said Interim Mayor Tom Souders.

Souders said he is doing his best to run the town until Klaffer's recovery.

"We are working on it, we are making progress, we will get there just bear with us and we will get back in order," he said.

Family said Monday's surgery is expected to last six hours. Klaffer is suffering multiple broken bones and isn't able to talk.

But Susan Vinyard said the town has never been more united during this difficult time.

"We have a lot of good people in Brookport and everybody is pulling for everyone else," she said. "So I think we will get the help from the mayor that is standing in."

Both believe that this is just another bump in the road and the town of Brookport will rebuild and more forward.

"We are trying to get it back to where the citizen lives in a little bit of order," Souders said.

"I am going to bring a new home on this property and I am going to start all over again and have a new life," Vinyard said.

The family is not releasing any more details about the mayor's condition.

According to interim mayor, who said he has been in contact with Klaffer's family, if all goes well in surgery Monday, they are hoping to move him to a hospital in Paducah on Wednesday.
