Root rot could limit your Christmas tree selection

Posted: Updated:

It's the quest that thousands of families go on every year - the search for the perfect Christmas tree.  Hollywood pokes fun at what we go through when trying to find the one that's just right.

But at the Pine Tree Barn in Wooster, Roger and Rita Dush know exactly what their customers are usually looking for.  They want the Frazier Fir, the most fickle tree around.  It takes years to grow the perfect Frazier fir.

"There's a lot of labor in these trees," says Rita.

Phy-tox-era fungus can easily wipe out a crop.  All it takes is a very wet season.

The Dush's lost 50 trees this year to the moisture-loving mold and they were among the lucky.

"It's not a huge issue here.  It's more of an issue in the Carolina's where they grow a lot of Fraziers and they have whole farms that die in the middle of the growing season," explains Rita.

In spite any loss the company has experienced, customers won't see any difference in price or availability.

"Farming is a very difficult business because you are not in control.  You are at the mercy of the weather and you do your best."
