Renewal Projects helps educate others on World AIDS Day

Posted: Updated:

All around the globe Sunday, people observed World AIDS Day - from St. Peters Square, where the Pope called on Catholics around the world to pray for those suffering with HIV and AIDS to right here in Richmond, where hundreds of red balloons were tied up and given away in Carytown.

The group Renewal Projects was handing out ribbons and brochures Sunday. They wanted to help Richmond residents honor those who have died of AIDS. Volunteers also aimed to educate others about HIV.

"It's all about education, the fact that HIV has been around for a really long time and education and knowledge is the key to this," said Gayle Slifka, president of Renewal Projects.

"It's important to continue the conversation, not just on World Day but everyday," said Rodney Lofton with Renewal Projects.

It is reported 35 million people around the world are living with HIV, and only 9 million of them have access to treatment.
