PIEDMONT, MO (KFVS) -

Piedmont Mayor William "Bill" Kirkpatrick is facing possible charges of driving while intoxicated, according to the Piedmont Police Department.

Chief of Police Richard Sanders said officers issued a DWI citation to Kirkpatrick following a crash on the corner of Main and Dryden Streets at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday in which Kirkpatrick hit the side of an apartment building with his vehicle.

Witnesses inside an apartment complex at that location say they heard a loud collision sound around the same time Sunday afternoon.

Richard Bloom lived inside the apartment building. He said after he heard the noise, he went outside and saw that a vehicle had struck the side of the apartment complex.

"I heard a loud crash. It sounded like an explosion and I came out and there were a couple of people that got out of a truck," Bloom said. "Then, I noticed a green truck against the wall over here when I went over here. There was a guy sitting in the truck and I recognized him as Bill Kirkpatrick, our mayor."

Bloom said he then called the Piedmont Police Department.

Chief Sanders said in a media release, "This is just one of many DWIs that this department has written. This doesn't necessarily make someone a bad person, they've just made a bad choice."

In that same statement, Chief Sanders advised people not to drink and drive.

Chief Sanders said formal charges from the county prosecutor's office are pending.
