Police: Man with hatchet killed after rushing at Selma officer

SELMA, AL (WSFA) -

One person is dead following an officer-related shooting in the city of Selma Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities tell WSFA 12 News police responded to a disorderly conduct call at the Church's Chicken restaurant on Broad Street and Griffin Avenue in downtown.

Selma Police Chief William Riley says officers found the man a block away and he was carrying a hatchet. Chief Riley says his officers approached the man but he rushed at the officers. Chief Riley says an officer fired one shot, fatally striking the man.

The person's identity has not yet been released.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case at the request of the Selma Police Department. ABI's investigation is routine because an officer discharged their weapon.
