Opelika man convicted of sexually abusing child

OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) -

A verdict was reached Wednesday in the trial of an Opelika man accused of sexually abusing the child of a former friend he would baby sit.

It did not take the jury very long to decide that 63-year old George Cannon is guilty of sexually abusing a child under the age of 12.

Cannon was arrested in September of 2012 after a grand jury indictment.

The victim, who is now 12, testified Cannon sexually abused her from ages seven until eight  when she would spend the night with Cannon and his wife.

Cannon's stepson, who is now 16, testified he was also sexually abused by Cannon when he was seven but never told anyone until he went to live with other relatives.

In court, the defense called a surprising character witness for Cannon, the victim's uncle.

Teddy Sailor testified Cannon is a good friend, that he'd never caught him in a lie and that he still trusts the man who was found guilty of abusing his niece.

The little girl testified that she did not tell her mother about the abuse until she was 9 because she was afraid of Cannon.

Cannon's attorneys maintain their client is innocent and say there is no DNA evidence linking him to any abuse.

Sentencing is slated for February 2014.
