Registered sex offender arrested in Henrico school's parking lot

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

A registered sex offender could face more jail time after police say he was found on Highland Spring High School's campus.

42-year-old Robert Paul Junior has already served time in prison for aggravated sexual battery.  He's supposed to stay away from any building with children.

Even standing across from the school is too close for a registered sex offender.  He is in jail right now, but just hearing this happened was concerning for students and faculty here.

The call to Henrico Police came in as a tip: a violent sex offender will be in the parking lot of Highland Springs High School.  When school resource officers checked, they found Paul sitting in a car on the parking lot.

NBC12 just told students Tynaisha Durant and Crystal Jackson that a convicted felon was just arrested outside their school right before students left for the day.

"Scared. I ride the bus but for anybody that walks home I know they would be scared," says Durant.

By law, Paul is supposed to stay 100 feet away from a school.  Having teenagers around wasn't the only concern; the parking lot is also near a daycare.

An online search through court records revealed Paul served two years in jail Nottoway County after pleading guilty to aggravated sexual battery.  But the court could not provide any other details beyond that.

School leaders say Paul never went inside the building and no students were ever in danger.

According to court records, Paul is from Blackstone but was working for a company in Richmond.  Police say they also found marijuana in his pocket.  He is now being held in Henrico Jail.

Police say the tip came from Lunenburg County Child Protective Services.  Administrators couldn't tell NBC12  why they alerted police, citing privacy laws.

The charge of being a registered sex offender at a school carries a maximum jail sentence of five years.
