ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) - It's a crime most of us can't comprehend: an Elizabethtown mother is accused of trying to sell her baby not once, but twice.

Police and prosecutors in Hardin County were baffled as well, trying to figure out what to do with this case.

"Sad doesn't even describe it," said Elizabethtown Officer Virgil Willoughby.

According to police, Luonda Martin showed up at the police station Tuesday, saying her relative had given Martin custody of her infant but that the birth mother now wanted the child back.

Martin thought she was adopting the baby according to a police report and on her Facebook page, she even posted pictures of the little girl. But police say the mother, Leeanna Brown, then wanted something in exchange for her baby, asking Martin to pay court costs and fines for a case she had pending.

Brown is now charged with selling or purchasing a child for adoption, which is a class D felony, punishable by 1 to 5 years in prison.

"There was a lot of work that went into finding these charges, initially endangering the welfare of a minor, we knew we had a crime, but then trying to find the elements, how that would fit our KRS was a little bit of a challenge," Willoughby said.

Martin told police that Brown had already tried to sell the baby to another woman for $5,000 but that deal fell through.

Martin told WAVE 3 News she could not discuss the case.

According to the arrest warrant, Brown also has a 1-year-old and 2-year-old who had been staying with two other families.

All three young girls are now in foster care and they are all living together.

Police say they're still investigating and there could be other charges.
