The holidays are here and it's the "most wonderful time of the year," right? Well, in case you didn't know, not everyone looks forward to the holidays. For some it's a dark, stressful, lonely time long known in mental health circles for higher rates of depression and suicide.
Many of us subscribe to the idea that the holidays are supposed to be all wrapped up with a bow-perfect and merry. The holiday movies and TV shows always have a happy ending, everyone always finds the true meaning of the season. These images set the stage with unrealistic expectations that few achieve. They leave many depressed and angry because they cannot meet unrealistic standards of playing host and providing elaborate gifts.
Unfortunately, in this day and age, the pressure to spend obscene amounts of money during the holiday season continues to grow. The holiday season also means people will be expected to spend more time with their family whether they get along with one another or not. If you find yourself stressed or depressed during the holiday season, realize you are not alone.
It is important to realize that few have a "Wonderful Life." Do your best to enjoy this holiday season.
