Carbondale ordinance fines businesses for not clearly sidewalks of snow

Posted: Updated:
CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The city of Carbondale has a city ordinance that states that after a snowfall businesses have 48 hours to clear at least 30 inches wide of snow and ice off their portion of the sidewalk.

If they fail to do so, they could get a penalty ranging from $15 all the way up to $750.

One business owner says he needs more time. He says there are not a lot of companies available within the first 48 hours to help him clear off his path. Plus it's harder to clear a path when scraped off ice and snow from the road is thrown on their portion of the sidewalk.

The city has this ordinance in place to help the community members avoid falling and to help the injured and handicap be able to move around easier.
