JACKSON, MO (KFVS) -

Would you stop if you saw a dog running along the road?

A Heartland man did, and that one action may have saved a woman’s life.

It all started when Jefferson Fox was driving through Jackson, heading to Cape Girardeau.

He was on Jackson Boulevard just past Highway 25, when he saw a dog along the side of the road.

He thought he would stop to help the dog, but he found the dog was already helping his owner.

It’s a busy intersection at Jackson Boulevard and Shawnee.

"I noticed a black and white border collie mix that had a leash attached to it, running back and forth on the edge of the highway,” said Fox.

A lot of drivers wouldn't stop if they saw a dog along the side of the road, but Fox did.

"I thought he was going to get hit, so I turned in at Shawnee and parked my car, ran down this embankment and found the dog at the next couple of houses," said Fox.

Fox tried to catch the dog, but she wouldn’t let him. He followed the collie along the road, and around the side of a house.

"When the dog turned the corner and went in the garage and I followed it in, there was another dog on the same red leash, and it was curled up next to the elderly woman on the floor," said Fox.

That’s where Fox found the dog’s elderly owner, a woman in her 70s.

Fox said the woman was shaking from the cold.

She told him she’d fallen around 5:30 a.m. that morning, and when he found her it was already 9:30 a.m.

"We came down the side of the building and turned this corner, the garage door was standing up and she was laying in the floor, in front of her front door, she was bleeding from her chin and her knees," said Fox.

Fox called 911, and emergency crews took her to the hospital.

Now both dogs, Cici and Honey, are staying with a neighbor.

Cici was showing a dog’s loyalty, truly living the phrase “man’s best friend.”

And Fox said there’s a lesson for everyone.

"You should always pay attention to what's going on around you, because if I hadn't noticed the dog I would have never noticed the lady," said Fox.

We’re told the woman is in the hospital for another night, but is doing well.

We contacted the hospital, but the woman said she didn't want to talk at this time.
