The first significant snowfall of the season for western Massachusetts is expected to begin Saturday evening. Forecasts call for about 8 inches of snow for many towns in the Pioneer Valley, including downtown Springfield, through Sunday morning. Higher amounts are possible in the hill towns.

Fortunately, the timing of the storm will not impact any major commutes. The heaviest snow is expected to begin around 9 p.m. Saturday and continue overnight, tapering off to lighter flurries around sunrise on Sunday morning.

The National Weather Service in Taunton, MA, posted winter storm warnings for western Massachusetts effective 1 p.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday. These warnings are issued when 6 or more inches of snow is likely within the next 36 hours.

The impacts of this storm will spread out across the entire Northeast with substantial snow for many states. Virtually all of New England is under a winter storm warning, with the exception of the immediate southern New England coast.

Winter storm warnings have also extended to parts of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania before the heaviest snow arrives in western Massachusetts.

This will likely be an all-snow event for western Massachusetts, unlike the last few rounds of wintry weather over the past week. The biggest chances of sleet or freezing rain mixing in with Saturday night's storm is expected to stay well south of the Springfield area.

A few brief bands of lake effect snow showers developed across parts of the Pioneer Valley today. These are not associated with Saturday night's storm.
