FAIRFAX, VA (WWBT) -

The city of Fairfax wants to tackle the exploding deer population through sterilization.

The state still needs to sign off on the program, which would be the first in Virginia, but appears likely to give approval, reports WTOP. Once approved, the program could launch within weeks.

The goal is to sterilize all female deer in the city in two years by surgically removing their ovaries, though the program would run five years. Experts would tranquilize does found in lawns, parks or roads, then take them to a location to conduct the surgery, tag them and then release them back in the wild.

In other cities, the program costs $1,000 per deer. In some cases, volunteer veterinarians help halve those costs. The costs in Fairfax would be covered by grants.
