ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Anderson police said they shot and killed a woman Friday night who shoplifted from Kohl's on Clemson Boulevard and led them on a chase.

The coroner identified the woman as Sharon Rebecca McDowell, 49, of Prevost Street.

"She ran from police and a chase ensued," Anderson County coroner Greg Shore said. "[Officers] got the car stopped and one of the other occupants of the car jumped out and ran, and the victim drove off again. She drove into a trailer park just outside the city of Anderson."

Captain Tony Tilley said that trailer park was a dead end dirt driveway off Appleton Street. Tilley said  the suspect still refused to get out of the vehicle.

The suspect then rammed a patrol car and tried to run down two officers who were outside their vehicle, according to Tilley.

"She backed her car into one patrol car and then she took off toward two officers that were on foot and that's when the shooting took place," Shore said.

Shore said the two officers who were on foot fired shots at the suspect. The suspect crashed her car into a house a few seconds later, Shore said.

Shore said McDowell was found dead at the scene.

"It appears she died from gunshot wounds," Shore said, adding that an autopsy would be performed to determine if the crash was a factor in McDowell's death.

McDowell's mother, Annie McDowell, feels her daughter's death was not justified. Annie McDowell admitted her daughter had drug problems that often caused problems with the law, but says her daughter didn't deserve to be shot.

"The lifestyle she lived, I thought deep down someone was going to hurt her on the street," Annie McDowell said. "I thought it would be a street person, not a person that's supposed to protect her - the police officers."

McDowell says she's waiting for answers and proof that officers had no other choice but to fatally shoot her daughter.

"She didn't have no gun to anybody, her life wasn't being threatened," said McDowell.

Lt. Tony Tilley with the Anderson Police Department says the officers involved in the shooting, Derrall Foster and Doug Partain,  have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

SLED is now investigating because it was an officer-involved shooting.
