LEE COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

A Lee County sheriff's deputy whose life was saved thanks to a Kevlar bulletproof vest is out of the hospital, Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon told WIS.

Sgt. Leroy Durant was shot once in the abdomen during a struggle with a man who fired several rounds at him and Cpl. Shante Demary after a traffic stop near Bishopville Thursday, Simon said.

Demary was shot twice in the leg and is still recovering at a Columbia hospital Sunday, Simon said.

Shortly after the shooting, deputies arrested and charged 52-year-old Yahchanan Christopher Reames with two counts of attempted murder as well as illegal drug possession.

Simon said Thursday the traffic stop was triggered by suspicious activity by Reames.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is still investigating the shooting.

Reames remains in the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center without bond.
