COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Authorities say a teenager was shot three times after pointing a gun at a deputy in Colleton County during a foot chase in Walterboro.

The Colleton County Sheriff's Office released a report on Monday that stated the incident started at 2:16 a.m. on Sunday when a deputy saw a vehicle make an improper turn.

When the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, authorities say the driver of the vehicle failed to stop at which point a car chase ensued.

The deputy reported that the driver eventually stopped the vehicle at a home off Beachwood Road where he fled from the vehicle.

According to investigators, responding deputies saw the driver holding a gun as he fled on foot. A report by the Colleton County Sheriff's Office states that while the suspect was running, he turned his upper torso toward the deputy and pointed his gun at the deputy.

The deputy said he then fired his gun striking the suspect three times in the buttocks area. The suspect was transported to MUSC for treatment. He was listed in stable condition.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division also responded to the scene.

Investigators say after the suspect receives treatment, he will be transported to the Colleton County Detention Center where he will be charged with pointing and presenting a firearm, failure to stop for blue lights, unlawful carrying of a firearm, aggravated assault and other traffic offenses.

"It is unfortunate anytime a deputy has to resort to discharging his duty weapon," said Sheriff R.A. Strickland."However, when such an incident occurs it is imperative that the State Law Enforcement Division investigate the incident to ensure all parties receive due process."

Sheriff's Lt. Amye Stivender said the deputy was not hurt.

A SLED representative confirmed the shooting was under investigation but provided no other details.
