High flood water leaves 5 dead in Kentucky

    A suburban Kansas City man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for stealing nearly $85,000 from his dead mother's Social Security benefits.
    A suburban Kansas City man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for stealing nearly $85,000 from his dead mother's Social Security benefits.

FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) – Emergency official recovered the bodies of five drowned victims from three separate accidents Sunday morning.

Nelson County officials were called to investigate a vehicle trapped in flood waters of the Rolling Fork River along Walter Hall Road and Dee Head Road, near New Hope, Kentucky.

According to Nelson County EMS, the vehicle drove into the water with five people inside. Two passengers were able to escape the flood waters, but three people were unable to get out. The bodies of those three were recovered and have been turned over to the Nelson County Coroner for identification and cause of death.

The names of the victims have not been released. They Marion County residents are between the ages of 30 and 60. EMS transported the two passengers who escaped to Flaget Memorial Hospital. Their condition is unknown.

"This is such a tragic loss, our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims' families," said Joe Prewitt, Nelson County Emergency Management Director. "This is a stark reminder why we caution people to never, never attempt to driver through, walk through or allow children to play in flood waters."

Along Gilgal Road, another drowning victim was recovered. In Carroll County, Anthony Ray Smith, Jr., 48, was trapped underneath a four-wheeler when it overturned in a creek. The official cause of death will be determined during his autopsy.

A third drowning victim accident occurred in Ballard County, where an abandoned vehicle was found in a flooded ditch and the victim's body was recovered shortly after.
