MGM Springfield responds to Longmeadow counter offer

While MGM Springfield officials continue to wait for the Massachusetts Gaming Commission's ruling on their suitability, they had words on Sunday for the town of Longmeadow.

We learned Saturday that the town's select board approved a counter offer to MGM's proposed surrounding community agreement.

Longmeadow asked for nearly $1 million up front and $500,000 in annual mitigation payments.

Those numbers are multiple times bigger than any agreement reached with the other surrounding communities.

Casino officials said the counter offer is inconsistent with the law.

In a letter addressed to Longmeadow's town manager, MGM Vice President of Global Gaming Development Mike Mathis said in part, "We were hoping to avoid any of our abutting communities from having to prove (or fail to prove, as we think the case will be) their surrounding community status in front of the gaming commission."

Mathis believes that is where they are headed given how far apart both sides are.
