Murfreesboro woman donates pet oxygen masks to fire department

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

Retired Murfreesboro police officer Joanna Meldon knows how hard it is to lose a pet.

Her beloved Sophie passed away after losing her battle with cancer.

"If you lose your house or something else in a fire, to lose your pet just adds more grief to it," Meldon said.

Meldon wanted to do something special in Sophie's memory, so she decided to donate four pet oxygen masks to the fire department in Murfreesboro.

"It means the difference between that animal possibly being saved and that animal not having a chance," said Murfreesboro firefighter Adam Petrig.

Murfreesboro firefighters say they only had human oxygen masks on their rescue trucks before this.

The pet oxygen masks that were donated come in different sizes so firefighters can help large and small dogs, even cats.

Meldon says even if her donation just saves one pet's life, it was worth the money she spent.
