HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

A Hanover man thought he won the police chase when he jumped into the freezing Chickahominy River, but Patrick J. Hooker is now jail after officers caught him on the other side in Henrico County.

Hanover deputies say they were trying to serve a felony warrant on Hooker when he took off.

The Barnes were inside their home off of Cedar Lane when there was a knock at their door.

"He appeared to be a SWAT member and asked us to stay in," said Debi Barnes.

"You just don't know what to expect," said Steve Barnes. "I mean, he wasn't very clear, he didn't have a lot of answers."

What officers did tell them: their neighbor, Patrick Hooker, was on the run. The next move he made surprised the couple.

Deputies say when they got to the house, Hooker took off towards the river. He crossed the woods and jumped into the freezing water - the temperature was in the 20's with a wind chill.

"I was just thinking how cold it was," said Steve. "I'm familiar with the river and how wide it is. It's pretty high right now."

The other side of the Chickahominy is Henrico County. Hanover called Henrico police for help.  For six hours, teams searched for the wanted man. Deputies say Hooker made his way across the river, that's when they had to call Henrico's SWAT team, who finally found him in a shed.

Deputies say Hooker was suffering from symptoms of hypothermia, but was otherwise unharmed. Hanover deputies say they have been called for other domestic disputes at this home before.

Neighbors say a woman lives there but nobody was home when we came by. Hooker is now being held at Pamunkey Regional Jail without bond.
