Slick roads keep towing company busy

CHICOPEE, MA (WSHM) -

Interstate Towing in Chicopee preps for nights just like this one, and they've had more than 100 calls as of earlier Thursday.

That number is only expected to rise as the night goes on and the snow continues to fall.

"Today's been intense, truthfully. We've had a high amount of call volumes," said Interstate Dispatcher Amanda Labelle.

Days like today, as expected, keep Labelle and tow truck drivers busy circling Western Mass. They've responded to dozens of calls, including a jack-knifed tractor-trailer that blocked traffic on I-91 south for hours this morning.

"Things can be dangerous out there for everyone so we just try to maintain it as well as possible," Labelle said.

That's why Gov. Deval Patrick and top state officials urged residents across the state to stay indoors tonight and into the morning.

"It helps us help you if people stay off the roads as much as possible," Patrick said in a press conference.

Patrick has activated the National Guard, and state agencies are also preparing to help out in case of emergencies.

"MEMA is currently transitioning to full activation, as you can understand given the circumstances," Patrick said.

Snow continues to fall steadily throughout Western Mass, and state police have reduced the speed limit on the MassPike down to 40 mph.

But no matter how slow the speed limit or how big the tires, Interstate workers know they'll be here all night, responding.

"We're definitely going full throttle. We are prepared more than anything else because we're expecting this much, so we're going to be prepared for that as well as possible," Labelle said.

Patrick says by the morning some 3,000 crews will be working to clear the roadways.
