COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Homeowners in Columbia's historic Granby Mill Village can apply for grant money to pay to repair water damage.

The City of Columbia has received two grants totaling $20,000 for the Granby Mill Village Stabilization Program.  The program is designed to stabilize historic mill homes within the Granby Mill Village Historic District, prevent further deterioration and restore structural soundness.

As Columbia's first suburb, the Granby Mill Village features the largest collection of architecturally similar buildings in Columbia.  Most of the homes were built in the 1890's to house employees of Granby Mill. The Granby Mill Village is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Architectural Conservation District.

Based on the amount of private investment, the program will be divided into two levels of projects.  Property owners will have to invest a minimum of 20% of the grant.  A Level I project requires a minimum investment of $1,200, of which $1,000 can be reimbursed based on final approval at completion.

A Level II project requires a minimum investment of $2,400, of which $2,000 could be reimbursed.

Repairs included in the grant are roofs, windows, siding or structural improvements.

Up to 20 buildings could be improved with a total investment of at least $2,400. Work must be done between March 1 and May 30, 2014.

Click here for a link to the grant application. Applications must be submitted by January 31, 2014.  For more information, call the Columbia Planning Division or send an email.
