GAINSVILLE, FL (WCJB/CNN) - One of the longest serving inmates on death row in the U.S. was executed in Florida.
Askari Abdullah Muhammad, previously known as Thomas Knight, was convicted of abducting and murdering a south Florida couple back in 1974.
After his conviction, Muhammad killed a corrections officer and was again sentenced to die.
But, a number of appeals over the past four decades delayed his execution.
"I'm 47, I'll be 48 next month and that's how old my dad was when he died. So, you know life is way too short and he was way too young to be taken like he was," the victim's daughter Carolyn Burke Thompson said.
Muhammad's Tuesday night execution was the first in the U.S. this year.
